On 24 October 1942, the 1st Marine Division was occupying a defensive position around Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. The 1st Battalion 7th Marines, commanded by LtCol Lewis B “Chesty” Puller helped form this line.

He was just a few months shy of his 20th birthday when he was killed in Quang Nam Province, Republic of Vietnam.

This month, 48 years after his death, the Lindale teen’s mother, Shirley McJunkin, was formally presented with certificates honoring his sacrifice.

Johnny Wayne Sitten — Wayne to his family and friends — was a lance corporal, a beloved son and cousin, a champion M&M cookie-maker and a U.S. Marine to his core.

He wrote letters home to his family asking for prayers, not just for his fellow Marines but for the children and people of Vietnam.

“His momma said ever since he was a little fella he wanted to be a Marine,” said Ricky Davenport, Sitten’s cousin. “Both his mom and dad tried to talk him out of it, but he was determined.”
