On 24 October 1942, the 1st Marine Division was occupying a defensive position around Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. The 1st Battalion 7th Marines, commanded by LtCol Lewis B “Chesty” Puller helped form this line.

Lou Piazza, a native of Joliet, Illinois, had always dreamed of joining the military, so he enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1967 before his 18th birthday. Piazza went on to serve a 13-month combat tour in Vietnam from March 13, 1968 to April 15, 1969. He was a rifleman with Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division and spent most of his time southwest of Da Nang (on Hill No. 41), fighting the North Vietnamese soldiers. On May 19, 1968, during Operation Mameluke Thrust in Happy Valley, Piazza saved the life of a fellow Marine and was awarded the U.S. Navy Commendation Medal for heroism. Now 67, Piazza is a retired salesman who lives in Venice and remains active in veteran affairs.
